About the Book
Life-changing events rarely happen in quiet Hollyhill, Kentucky, and when they do, they are few and far between. But for young Jocie Brooke and her family, they happen all at once during the humid summer of 1964. Though on the surface things are just fine, it seems like everyone in Jocie's life has something they're not saying, something they're hiding from her--and from themselves. As Jocie digs into her family's past, she stirs up a whirlwind of discoveries. Will she find the answers everyone so desperately needs? Or will her questions lead to truths better left hidden?
Combining unforgettable characters, true-to-life struggles, and the perfect dose of humor and nostalgia, this riveting story from bestselling author Ann Gabhart explores the very essence of new life and love.
Lydia's Review
Having a large pile of review books and realizing that this book was about a younger girl I asked my sister Lydia if she'd be willing to read and review it for me. She agreed and though she didn't really like the book enough to finish it here's her thoughts!
This book was an interesting read. I'll admit that it was difficult to get used to the blatant differences between the two main characters. Each character was well developed though, and the variety enhanced the charming small town feel. From spirited, yet sensitive Jocie, to wild and hilarious Wes, to Bible quoting Aunt Love, the people of Hollyhill endeared themselves to their readers. Though it wasn't exactly the book for me, I can see what other readers would love about it. It was very well written and it was nice to see their different perspectives. the humor was delightful and the animals were just plain great. All in all, the book had a lot of heart and I definitely know of friends I'd recommend it to!

It's Monday! What Are You Reading? #68
Hosted By: Book Journey
Here is what I finished last week:
All of these were pretty good reads!
What I am currently reading:
So far so good on these books! I'm not very far in to any but The Three Musketeers so it's to early to form a definitive opinion!
What I hope to read this week:
So I obviously didn't get around to the two books I selected for last week so I'm going to try again though I'll probably read Merciless first since it's the third of the trilogy and I'll want to know what happens!

Duchess by Susan May Warren
About the Book
A glamorous Hollywood starlet must fight for her life, her love, and her country in this epic 1930s tale.
During the golden age of Hollywood, film star Roxy Price's future shines bright -- until the fated Black Friday when it all comes crashing down. Her only hope is to join forces with Belgian duke Rolfe Van Horne, a film investor. But Rolfe is not who he seems, and his plans to support a growing unrest in Europe could break Roxy's heart and endanger her life. When her country needs her, will she have the courage to surrender her glittering world and her one true love?
My Thoughts
As it was with both of the previous Daughter of Fortune books this story swept me and wreaked havoc on my emotions. I was happy, sad, frustrated, mad, anxious, and every feeling in between. I don't know how she does it but Susan May Warren is one amazing author! After the end of Baroness I have been dying to finally read Rosie's story and it definitely was worth the wait. I am amazed at the fact that even after how much Rosie had to go through she never gave up. Her whole life was one loss after another and yet somehow she found the strength to go on. Rolfe was really cool and, even though she didn't want to admit it, exactly the kind of guy Rosie needed. I loved the setting of old Hollywood and it was absolutely perfect for the story. There is so much more I could say but I want to leave you to discover things on your own and I will leave you with the fact that this is a beautifully amazing series that you should definitely read-just be sure to do it in order!
About the Author
Growing up in Minneapolis and attending the U of MN, I learned to love city life, although I'm a woodsy girl
at heart. Or maybe I'm an adventurer -- having lived and traveled all over the world, including Siberia Russia as a missionary for eight years. Probably that's why my characters can't sit still, and seem to get into one scrape after another -- they're too much like me! I love God, my family, my country, my church, and feel privileged every day to be able to write stories, that I hope inspire and entertain!
I received this book free from the publisher in exchange for my review. I was not required to write a positive review. The opinions I have expressed are my own.

The Question:
What was the last book you read that made you laugh out loud?
My Answer:
I tend to laugh out loud at anything I find funny in books so I'm pretty sure I laughed out loud at least once during all of the books I've read lately but the last book that had me constantly laughing was The Big Picture by Jenny B. Jones!

Very intriguing! There are so many questions and (being a bit of a sci-fi fan) theories that pop into your brain at that sentence!

The Heiress of Winterwood by Sarah Ladd
About the Book
Darbury, England, 1814
Amelia Barrett gave her word. Keeping it could cost her everything.
Amelia Barrett, heiress to an estate nestled in the English moors, defies family expectations and promises to raise her dying friend’s baby. She’ll risk everything to keep her word—even to the point of proposing to the child’s father—a sea captain she’s never met.
When the child vanishes with little more than an ominous ransom note hinting at her whereabouts, Amelia and Graham are driven to test the boundaries of their love for this little one.
Amelia’s detailed plans would normally see her through any trial, but now, desperate and shaken, she’s forced to examine her soul and face her one weakness: pride.
Graham’s strength and self-control have served him well and earned him much respect, but chasing perfection has kept him a prisoner of his own discipline. And away from the family he has sworn to love and protect.
Both must learn to have faith and relinquish control so they can embrace the future ahead of them.
My Thoughts
With every book I pick up by a debut author I have a slight moment of hesitation wondering if I will like the book. This book was no different but that doubt fled as soon as I started to read and I began to fall in love. The plot is definitely unique and intriguing (though just a heads up, so you aren't surprised like I was, the kidnapping that the synopsis mentions doesn't happen till well into the story!) and I thoroughly enjoyed it. The characters were great as well and though I didn't form an emotional attachment to any of them I still really liked them and thought they were were beautifully written. In short I liked almost everything about this book from the plot to the setting to the characters and I will definitely looking for more from this author in the future!

Rebellious Heart by Jody Hedlund
Bethany House-September 15, 2013
About the Book
In 1763 Massachusetts, Susanna Smith has grown up with everything she's ever wanted, except one thing: an education. Because she's a female, higher learning has been closed to her, but her quick mind and quicker tongue never back down from a challenge. She's determined to put her status to good use, reaching out to the poor and deprived. And she knows when she marries well, she will be able to continue her work with the less fortunate.
Ben Ross grew up a farmer's son and has nothing to his name but his Harvard education. A poor country lawyer, he doesn't see how he'll be able to fulfill his promise to make his father proud of him. When family friends introduce him to the Smith family, he's drawn to quick-witted Susanna but knows her family expects her to marry well. When Susanna's decision to help an innocent woman no matter the cost crosses with Ben's growing disillusionment with their British rulers, the two find themselves bound together in what quickly becomes a very dangerous fight for justice.
Why I Want It
Well first off Jody Hedlund is a simply amazing author and I'm pretty sure I will read whatever she writes! And secondly, doesn't it just sound so good?! I want to read it right now!

A Noble Groom by Jody Hedlund
About the Book
Recently widowed Annalisa Werner has the feeling her husband was murdered but can't prove it. Alone with her young daughter in 1881 Michigan, she has six months left to finish raising the money needed to pay back the land contract her husband purchased, and the land is difficult to toil by herself. She needs a husband. With unmarried men scarce, her father sends a letter to his brother in the Old Country, asking him to find Annalisa a groom.
For nobleman Carl von Reichart, the blade of the guillotine is his fate. He's been accused and convicted of a serious crime he didn't commit, and his only escape is to flee to a small German community in Michigan where he'll be safe. He secures a job on Annalisa's farm but bumbles through learning about farming and manual labor.
Annalisa senses that Carl is harboring a secret about his past, yet she finds herself drawn to him anyway. He's gentle, kind, and romantic--unlike any of the men she's ever known. He begins to restore her faith in the ability to love--but her true groom is still on his way. And time is running out on them all.
My Thoughts
As soon as I heard about this book I knew I'd love it, simply because I'm entirely convinced this author cannot possibly write a bad book! So I waited with baited breath for my copy to come in the mail and squealed with excitement when it did. I had to wait a short bit before I was able to start it but once I did I didn't want to stop. I loved the fact that the characters were German since I'm 3/4 German and spent a year learning a bit of the language. The plot itself was really cool and I really liked how everything played out. Annalisa's character was great and I enjoyed her but my favorite was definitely Carl. I loved how despite the fact that he hadn't really worked a day in his life, he didn't shy away from the work that was given him. No matter how hard it was he stumbled through until he figured it out. And then add to that how kind, caring, and considerate he was with Annalisa, Gretchen, and even the dog. There were many twists that I didn't see coming and I laughed, cried , and sighed my way through this amazingly awesome book. I can't say enough how amazing this author is and I HIGHLY recommend buying and reading all four of her fantastic novels!

Learning to Love by Heidi & Rolland Baker
About the Book
Missionary Leaders Reveal Behind-the-Scenes Glimpses from Africa
Continuing where their book Expecting Miracles left off, this narrative draws from the last five years of the life of Iris Ministries. Woven alongside fascinating narrative from Mozambique is teaching from Heidi and Rolland that communicates the distilled wisdom about the heart of the Gospel from all their years of serving the poor.
More than any of their previous books, this one has the most to say about what Rolland and Heidi have learned about love--whether in Africa or wherever home might be: finding intimacy with Jesus, concentrating on the humble and lowly, being willing to suffer for love's sake, finding God's supply of utterly needed miracles, and walking in the unquenchable joy of the Lord. Every reader will find incredible challenge and refreshment in these pages.
My Thoughts
It's a little hard to put my thoughts about this book into words but here goes! It was really cool to get a glimpse into all that God is doing through these missionaries in Mozambique. There is definitely some powerful things happening! That being said I felt like it could have been told a little better. It really felt like it was a bunch of blog posts stuck in a book, which is fine, I just would have preferred if it was formatted like that rather than looking like a normal book. But that really isn't a big deal and if you feel like something like that wouldn't bother you than I highly encourage reading this!
About the Authors
Heidi and Rolland Baker, founders of Iris Ministries, served as missionaries in Indonesia and Hong Kong
before following God's call in 1995 to Mozambique. In the face of overwhelming need, the Bakers now watch God provide miraculously for well over 10,000 children every day through their ministry, and many more through the Iris network of more than 15,000 churches, Bible schools, primary schools, and remote outreach programs. They live in Mozambique, Africa.
I received this book free from the publisher in exchange for my review. I was not required to write a positive review. The opinions I have expressed are my own.

About the Book
When her friend vanishes from a cruise ship, reporter Darcy St. James isn't satisfied with their explanation that she simply left her job of her own accord. Something isn't lining up, and Darcy believes the only way to find the truth is to put herself in Abby's position. Within days, Darcy learns her friend wasn't the only person to disappear mysteriously. Last summer, a woman vanished under almost identical circumstances.
Gage McKenna has taken a summer-long stint leading adventure excursions for the passengers of various cruise lines that dock for a few days of sightseeing. He's surprised to find Darcy working aboard one of the ships, investigating a troubling report. Something sinister is going on and the deeper they dig the more Gage fears they've only discovered the tip of the iceberg.
Why I Want It
I have absolutely loved this author's first two books and after already being introduced to these characters in the previous books I'm super excited to read their story! Also the plot just sounds so good!

Stress Test by Richard L. Mabry, M.D.
About the Book
They may not have enough evidence to convict him, but they have enough to ruin his life.
Dr. Matt Newman thought he was leaving his life in private practice for a better one in academic medicine. But the kidnappers who attacked him as he left his last shift in the ER have no such plans—they just want him dead. Bound and in the trunk of his car, Matt’s only thought is escape. He does so, but at a price: a head injury that lands him in the ICU . . . where he awakens to discover he’s being charged with murder.
Sandra Murray is a fiery, redheaded lawyer who swore she was done with doctors. But when Matt calls, she knows she can’t walk away from defending someone who is truly innocent.
Matt’s career is going down the drain. His freedom and perhaps his life may be next. But with the police convinced he’s a murderer and the kidnappers still trying to finish what they started, finding the truth—and the faith to keep going—will be the toughest stress test Matt has ever endured.

My Thoughts
I was a little worried going into this book since I get grossed out very easily and the main character of this story was a doctor. But the story-line intrigued me enough to risk it and I'm glad I did. There were a couple scenes that had me cringing but I just kinda sped through them and I was fine. I ended up really enjoying the book. The plot was as good as I'd hoped it would be and the characters were really well done. Sorry that this review is so short, but I just couldn't come up with anything else to say!
