My Thoughts
This Princess and the Pea meets Beauty and the Beast tale is definitely one of my new Melanie Dickerson favorites! I actually devoured all 307 pages of this book in one afternoon due to an impending deadline but I would have burned through it rapidly regardless because I loved it from the beginning to the end!
When we met the Margrave of Thornbeck in the first book of this series I wasn't sure what to make of him but as I got to know him I realized he was a hero I could admire. He had dealt with a lot of pain in his life and as a result had a gruff exterior but despite that he still had a kind heart. It just took the right person to bring it out in him. And that person was Avelina. She was loving, kind, clever, genuine even though she was being forced to be someone she wasn't, humble, and yet bold when it was necessary. I loved watching their romance play out through all of it's ups and downs.
There were a couple mysteries throughout and a bit of adventure near the end but I liked how the main focus of this story was on Reinhart and Avelina's journey to love.
I really enjoyed seeing more of Jorgen and Odette from The Huntress of Thornbeck Forest and I loved Magdalen's character! I hope she gets her story told!
If you love fairy-tale re-imaginings or just a good story I highly recommend this book!

My Thoughts
This author has become well-loved for her fairy-tale retellings and this Robin Hood meets Swan Lake story was another enjoyable read!
I liked Jorgen and Odette's characters, they had both had hard childhoods and I admired how instead of being bitter about that they used it to fuel their desire to help children who faced the same hardships. They both had kind hearts and you could tell from the beginning that they were well suited for each other and I enjoyed seeing their relationship play out.
The different mysteries throughout kept me interested and some I didn't figure out until they were revealed at the end.
There were a few instances where the writing didn't flow as well as I'd like but overall it was another great novel from a wonderful author!

I love Melanie's books, and this one sounds like it will be really good!

My Thoughts
As is always the case with this author, I thoroughly enjoyed this book! I absolutely love how Melanie transforms fairy-tales into intriguing adventures and I especially love how she keeps them all connected! Rapunzel and Gerek's story was fun and sweet, the way they started off not liking each other which turned into a unlikely friendship, then into romance. It was fun how the story partially overlapped with the events of The Princess Spy giving us a different perspective. While I guessed how most of the story would play out it still kept me interested until the end and was another fantastic installment in this fascinating series!

Top Ten Author Duos I Want to Write a Series Together

#1. Julie Lessman, Susan May Warren, Sarah Sundin, and Ronie Kendig-So this is four authors not two but I've had this idea for a series that is about four generations of men who fight in WWI (Julie Lessman), WWII (Sarah Sundin), Vietnam War (Susan May Warren), and the War on Terror (Ronie Kendig). These are all brilliant authors and I think this would be a fabulous collaboration!

#2. Melissa Tagg & Jenny B. Jones-My sides would literally split from laughter! These authors are hysterical and they would probably write the funniest series ever!

#3. Karen Witemeyer & Cathy Marie Hake-Two of my favorite authors when it comes western humor!

#4. Dani Pettrey & Irene Hannon-Both of these authors write contemporary suspense and I think they'd write a pretty awesome series together.

#5. Melanie Dickerson & Dina L. Sleiman-I think these two could write a fun retelling series together!

#6. Laura Frantz & Lori Benton-These two both write amazing books that take place in the early years of our country and they'd do a pretty good job writing a series together.

#7. Kate Breslin & Tricia Goyer-I think these two could write a pretty great WWII series together!

#8. Jill Williamson & C.J. Darlington-Both of these authors have written really brilliant Christian Dystopian and it would be cool to see what they would come up with!

#9. Shelley Adina & Melody Carlson-These authors could write a fun YA series!

About the Book

Then Colin retrieves an heirloom she lost in a well, and asks her to spy on Claybrook as repayment. Though when Margaretha overhears Claybrook one day, she discovers her romantic notions may have been clouding her judgment about not only Colin but Claybrook as well. It is up to her to save her father and Hagenheim itself from Claybrook’s wicked plot.

My Thoughts
Sorry that this review has been a long time coming! In the craziness of everything is forgotten that I hadn't written it yet! So my humblest apologies if this review seems a bit lacking!
While this wasn't my favorite of Melanie's books I did still enjoy reading it! One of my favorite things about it was that it finally connected my favorite book The Merchant's Daughter to the rest by having Colin  be Lord Ranulf & Annabel's grandson!
Margaretha's somewhat flighty nature  was at times annoying and at others endearing but through it all I did end up liking her character as well as Colin's and enjoyed watching them balance each other out.
The adventure of trying to stop Claybrook in time made for a fun read and it was definitely fun to watch them succeed!

So while it wasn't quite up to the standards of Melanie's other books I still really liked it and would definitely recommend it!

Top Ten Books That Will Make You Swoon

#1. Any and all of Julie Lessman's books-I can't think of any book that makes me "swoon" more than Julie's novels! The romance is second to none! I mean come on, who wouldn't swoon with drop dead gorgeous Irish men?!

#2. The River of Time Series by Lisa T. Bergren-Luca, Marcello, and Greco-need I say more?!

#3. Sarah Sundin's books-WWII plus amazing heroes and beautiful love stories?! Practically perfection!

#4. Karen Witemeyer's books-Some of the best westerns with heroes guaranteed to make you melt!

#5. Jody Hedlund's books-These books sweep you away to another time and place and there are so many swoon-worthy moments!

#6. Sean Donovan and Donovan's Daughter by Lori Wick-These are some of my all-time favorites and I melt every time I read them! Nothing like a good love-after-marriage story!

#7. Melanie Dickerson's Fairytale Retellings-These books are so good and definitely the type to make you swoon! Princess fairytales retold with dashing heroes?! Umm yes please!!

#8. The Convenient Groom by Denise Hunter-I sighed so many times during this at the adorablitly (yes I know that's not a word!) and sweetness of Lucas! Definitely one to make you swoon!

#9. Against the Tide by Elizabeth Camden-Take a "bad boy" and turn him into an amazing, dashing, and caring hero and you've got great swooning material!

#10. Several of Susan May Warren's books-I don't want to get into listing them but suffice it to say she writes amazing and absolutely swoon-worthy heroes!

About the Book
Happily Ever After ...Or Happily Nevermore? Gisela's childhood was filled with laughter and visits from nobles such as the duke and his young son. But since her father's death, each day has been filled with nothing but servitude to her stepmother. So when Gisela learns the duke's son, Valten---the boy she has daydreamed about for years---is throwing a ball in hopes of finding a wife, she vows to find a way to attend, even if it's only for a taste of a life she'll never have. To her surprise, she catches Valten's eye. Though he is rough around the edges, Gisela finds Valten has completely captured her heart. But other forces are bent on keeping the two from falling further in love, putting Gisela in more danger than she ever imagined.

My Thoughts
As with all of Melanie's novels, I loved this book! She once again did a fantastic job of retelling the fairytale without making it sound exactly like the original. There was enough that you recognized it as the fairytale but it was completely unique at the same time!
I loved both Valten and Gisela! Valten was the perfect hero, chivalrous, kind, brave, and able to fight! I loved how even though he was the eldest son of a Duke he didn't act like he was above everyone else but was kind to all he met. And Gisela was great! She didn't let years of being basically a slave to her step family make her bitter and instead was sweet and kind. I loved that there were many characters from The Fairest Beauty that we at least saw briefly, it was was fun to visit them again!
There were so many things that happened in this book and it seemed that everything that could go wrong did! But it was all believable and I kept reading trying to figure out how it would all work out in the end.

All in all another superb novel from the extremely talented Melanie Dickerson!
