The Lady and the Lionheart by Joanne Bischof

About the Book
Raised amid the fame and mystique of the Big Top, Charlie Lionheart holds the audience in the palm of his hand. But while his act captivates thousands, it's away from the spotlight where his true heart lies. Here he humbly cares for his pride of lions as if they were his brothers, a skill of bravery and strength that has prepared him for his most challenging feat yet--freeing an orphaned infant from the dark bondage of a sideshow. A trade so costly, it requires his life in exchange for hers, leaving him tarnished by the price of that choice. As the circus tents are raised on the outskirts of Roanoke, nurse Ella Beckley arrives to tend to this Gypsy girl. All under the watchful eye of a guardian who not only bears a striking resemblance to the child, but who protects the baby with a love that wraps around Ella's own tragic past, awakening a hope that goodness may yet reign. When their forbidden friendship deepens, Charlie dares to ask for her heart, bringing her behind the curtain of his secret world to reveal the sacrifice that gave hope to one little girl--boldly showing Ella that while her tattered faith is deeply scarred, the only marks that need be permanent are his own.

My Thoughts
When this book came out it seemed it was all anyone (in the Christian book community) could talk about. I’m a bit ashamed at how long it took me to finally read it, but I tried to make up for it by reading all but fifty pages in one sitting. I know now what everyone was raving about and I’m ready to start raving too. This book was amazing and beautiful and just completely wonderful from start to finish. I’m starting to become a little obsessed with circus themed things especially after a certain musical came out, but this was so much more than just a circus book.
Charlie was everything. His quiet faith, the irreversible sacrifices he made for Holland, his strength, and his vulnerability. How could you not love Charlie?! My heart broke for what he had to endure, but he did it willingly and without complaint as long as it meant protecting his family. Also a man with a baby is the single most attractive thing!
Ella was wonderful too, the way she cared so deeply for people, unwilling to stand by while someone suffered even if helping came at a personal cost. What she suffered at the hands of someone she should have been able to trust made me want to weep and then go hit the louse.
I loved watching Charlie and Ella slip beneath the other’s defenses until they were both so deeply connected to each other. Neither of them expected to fall in love but they were each exactly what the other didn’t know they needed.
Everything about this novel was superb and I loved every single second. I read it while at a super late night babysitting job and the time simply flew by as I lost myself in these pages. I’m adding my recommendation to so many others out there, you absolutely need to read this book!

Sons of Blackbird Mountain by Joanne Bischof

About the Book
A Tale of Family, Brotherhood, and the Healing Power of Love
After the tragic death of her husband, Aven Norgaard is beckoned to give up her life in Norway to become a housekeeper in the rugged hills of nineteenth-century Appalachia. Upon arrival, she finds herself in the home of her late husband’s cousins—three brothers who make a living by brewing hard cider on their three-hundred-acre farm. Yet even as a stranger in a foreign land, Aven has hope to build a new life in this tight-knit family.
But her unassuming beauty disrupts the bond between the brothers. The youngest two both desire her hand, and Aven is caught in the middle, unsure where—and whether—to offer her affection. While Haakon is bold and passionate, it is Thor who casts the greatest spell upon her. Though Deaf, mute, and dependent on hard drink to cope with his silent pain, Thor possesses a sobering strength.
As autumn ushers in the apple harvest, the rift between Thor and Haakon deepens and Aven faces a choice that risks hearts. Will two brothers’ longing for her quiet spirit tear apart a family? Can she find a tender belonging in this remote, rugged, and unfamiliar world?

A haunting tale of struggle and redemption, Sons of Blackbird Mountain is a portrait of grace in a world where the broken may find new life through the healing mercy of love.

My Thoughts
Where to even begin? This book took my breath away with its quiet beauty.
Based on the caliber of this author and some high praise from trusted sources I knew this book was going to be amazing, but there’s nothing quite like experiencing mind-blowing story for yourself.
This author somehow took a man who was deaf and mute with a dependence on strong drink and turned him into a hero with unimaginable layers and depth that you couldn’t help falling in love with. She gave him a voice all his own, that was even more powerful than those who can speak and hear. I was honestly in awe of the way the author made him come alive on the page. Thor was quite simply amazing and one of the best written characters I have ever seen.
Aven was wonderful in her own right as well. She had a hard life but she still had hope for the future and I loved the way that she accepted Thor for who he was while also cheering him on to become better. Many people would have just written him off but Aven saw a deeper side of him and stuck close.
Thor and Aven’s love story quietly unfolded in such a beautiful way and you couldn’t help but getting swept away in it.
The brother’s relationship was certainly rocky at times but through it all they were there for each other and I loved seeing their dynamics. There were also many other characters and relationships that were all wonderfully written and captured my heart.
This book dealt with many hard issues, alcoholism, racism, family rifts, and deafness, to name the big ones, but they were all handled in a respectful yet realistic manner. Which is another testament to this author’s brilliance!

I could honestly go on for days raving about this book but I think I’ll leave you with this-I loved every page of this book and cannot recommend it enough!

Top Ten New-to-Me Authors I Read in 2014

Top Ten Tuesday is a meme hosted by The Broke and the Bookish

I read a lot of really good books by new-to-me authors this year but these are the ten that stuck out the most!

Kate Breslin-Her debut novel For Such a Time blew me away and I can't wait to see what else this author has in store for us!

Jill Williamson-It is sad how long it took me to read books by this author but I am loving her Safe Lands novels and I will be definitely reading her other books!

Victoria Bylin-I absolutely loved Until I Found You and I am very excited about her upcoming release!

Patricia Bradley-Both of her books that released this year were exceptional suspense novels and I am really looking forward to the chance to read book three next year.

C.J. Darlington-I'd heard about this author a lot through my sister who is friends with her but I hadn't read any of her books till Jupiter Winds which I devoured! I really hope there are going to be more books in that series!

Mary Weber-I loved her debut Storm Siren and I am eagerly awaiting the next book in the series so I can find out what happened!

Kristy Cambron-Another beautiful debut that totally captured me! A brilliant mix of past and present!

Laura Jackson-I was a little surprised by how much I loved Worth the Wait though I really shouldn't have been! The hero of the story is probably one of my favorites that I read in 2015

Joanne Bischof-After hearing good things about this author I finally picked up her first book and I loved it! Now I just have to go buy the next two in the series!

Chelsea Jacobs-This debut author wrote such a poignant story and it has really stuck with me!
