Friday Memes 3/27

Book Blogger Hop

The Question:
Which books have you read in the past month that still have you thinking back to the storyline and the characters?

My Answer:
Three Little Words and From the Start by Melissa Tagg!!!

"Please join me every Friday to share the first sentence (or so) of the book you are reading, along with your initial thoughts about the sentence, impressions of the book, or anything else the opener inspires. Please remember to include the title of the book and the author's name."

Rebels by Jill Williamson

About the Book
The remnant of Glenrock has been scattered. But they are not beaten.
The Safe Lands have long kept the true meaning of Liberation secret from their people. But after being sentenced to Liberation themselves, Mason and Omar soon discover the truth.
Levi watched his brothers’ public sentencing and tries to hold out hope they are still alive, He is forced to focus his attention elsewhere, however, when his new wife, Jemma, is captured and made the Safe Lands’ newest Queen. His only choice to save Jemma may be to take up Omar’s old role of undercover vigilante, leading the rebels in their quest to overthrow the government. But will Levi’s new role be enough?
Meanwhile, Jemma’s sister, Shaylinn, is ready to give birth to the “Safe Lands’” children … but not even Ciddah is sure they can be delivered safely in the midst of a rebellion. And Mason must face the fact Omar’s illness could be fatal.

If they can all unite their efforts, together they may be able to expose the Safe Lands’ lies to the people. But if they fail, they will all surely die.

My Thoughts
I'm kind of ashamed by how long it took me to get around to reading this book! It has been on my shelf for months but since it didn't have a date for when I had to get my review up I kept setting it aside for review books with tour dates. But I finally got caught up a bit and I quickly devoured this book! I'll probably be keeping this review pretty short since it is the third book in the series and I don't want to spoil anything!
I once again loved all of the characters and it was fun to see how this next chapter in their lives played out. There were several interesting turns along the way, many of which were unexpected. Jill Williamson did a fantastic job with the unique world she created and I was once again impressed by her attention to every detail.

I was sad to say goodbye to Levi, Mason, Omar, and everyone else but it was a good ending and I'm looking forward to reading more of this author's books!

Waiting on Wednesday #154: Buried Secrets

"Waiting On" Wednesday is a weekly event that spotlights upcoming releases that we're
eagerly anticipating.

This week's pre-publication "can't-wait-to-read" selection is:

Buried Secrets by Irene Hannon
Revell-April 7, 2014

About the Book
After seven years as a Chicago homicide detective, Lisa Grant has hit a wall. Ready for a kinder, gentler life, she takes a job as a small-town police chief. But the discovery of a human skeleton by a construction crew at the edge of town taxes the resources of her department. A call for assistance brings detective Mac McGregor, an ex-Navy SEAL, to her doorstep. As they work to solve the mystery behind the unmarked grave, danger begins to shadow them. Someone doesn't want this dead person telling any tales--and will stop at nothing to make certain a life-shattering secret stays buried.

Master storyteller Irene Hannon is back with an exciting new series featuring former special forces operatives now in the thick of the action in civilian life. Hannon is at the top of her game in this can't-put-it-down thriller that will have readers up until the wee hours devouring every page.

Why I Want It
I have always been a huge Irene Hannon fan and I have have loved each of her novels. So I can pretty much guarantee that I will love this one as well! And in addition to loving the author, I've always been fascinated by cold case stories!
*Full disclosure: I just received a copy of this book and started it this morning but I was already planning to highlight it for my WOW and just decided to go ahead! It's amazing so far!

Beloved Dust by Jamin Goggin and Kyle Strobel

About the Book
Pastor Jamin Goggin and theology professor Kyle Strobel provide a path to abiding with God.
We were formed from the dust, but we were made for life with God. We often accept less. We make promises and set goals to try and grow, but holiness seems impossible. But the Christian life is not about looking or feeling like a Christian. It’s about abiding in God.
If communion with God is your goal, self-help strategies and personal resolutions will fail you. But Jesus Christ will not.
Drawing deeply from Scripture and narrating their own experiences, Pastor Jamin Goggin and theology professor Kyle Strobel wrote this book to be a companion for your journey with Jesus in the truth of yourself – as his beloved dust. This is not weighing tasks and rewards, but is a process of patience, prayer, and openheartedness.

Prayerfully read this book. Prepare your heart for the gifts God has for you. Beloved Dust invites readers to discover the fundamental simplicity and radical transformation of being with God.

My Thoughts
This book took me forever to read, but not for the reasons you'd normally think. This book wasn't slow or boring on the contrary this might just be one of the most amazing books I've ever read and I truly believe it changed my life. The sole reason that it took me such a long time to finish this book was that I kept getting writer's cramp from writing down the quotes that impacted me. By the time I had finished I had seventeen pages of quotes that I know I will be looking over many times.

Having been a Christian for almost all of my life, a lot of non-fiction books are filled with stuff that I have heard time and again. Not that I think those things shouldn't be written, but for me I tend to get a little bored when reading them. The same could not be said of Beloved Dust, it shook me awake and made me reevaluate the way I was viewing God and how I was spending time with him, and also made me look at prayer in a whole new light. I honestly believe every Christian should read this book, you won't be the same.

How to Catch a Prince by Rachel Hauck

About the Book
She caught her prince once. Can she catch him again?
American heiress Corina Del Rey's life was devastated by war. Every thing she loved was lost. But after five years of grief, she's shed her grave clothes and started over in the sunshine along the Florida coast.
But some things are not so easily forgotten. When a secret from her past confronts her face to face, she realizes she must follow her heart. Even if it cost her everything.
Prince Stephen of Brighton Kingdom is a former Royal Air Command lieutenant turned star rugby player, trying to make sense of his life after the devastation of war.

Yet, true love has a destiny all it's own. As the cathedral bells peal through Cathedral City, Corina and Stephen must chose to answer the call of love on their hearts.
Or let it be lost forever?
Purchase a copy: http://bit.ly/1BD8DVo

My Thoughts
After loving the first two books in this series I was so excited to read this third one especially since it was about Stephen, whose character I really liked when reading the other books.
After having two heroines who were thrust into the world of opulence it was fun to have one who was quite used to and at home in the world of the rich. But I was very glad that she was down to earth about it all and didn't put on airs, the same was true of Stephen. Both of their characters were awesome and it was sweet to watch them as they realized they'd never stopped loving each other. Stephen was a bit bullheaded about it but at the same time I understood where he was coming from, and it was a beautiful moment when he finally broke.
I thoroughly enjoyed almost everything about this book and really the only thing I didn't love was the whole “heavenly help” bit with The Manor, Adelaide, and Brill. I'm not saying it couldn't happen it was just a little too far out of my comfort zone. That being said it didn't affect my enjoyment of the book at all and I would highly recommend it!

Waiting on Wednesday #153: A Sparrow in Terezin

"Waiting On" Wednesday is a weekly event that spotlights upcoming releases that we're
eagerly anticipating.

This week's pre-publication "can't-wait-to-read" selection is:

A Sparrow in Terezin by Kristy Cambron
Thomas Nelson-April 7, 2014

About the Book
Bound together across time, two women will discover a powerful connection through one survivor's story of hope in the darkest days of a war-torn world.
Present Day—With the grand opening of her new art gallery and a fairytale wedding just around the corner, Sera James feels she's stumbled into a charmed life—until a brutal legal battle against fiancé William Hanover threatens to destroy the perfectly planned future she’s planned before it even begins. Now, after an eleventh-hour wedding ceremony and a callous arrest, William faces a decade in prison for a crime he never committed, and Sera must battle the scathing accusations that threaten her family and any hope for a future.
1942—Kája Makovsky narrowly escaped occupied Prague in 1939, and was forced to leave her half-Jewish family behind. Now a reporter for the Daily Telegraph in England, Kája discovers the terror has followed her across the Channel in the shadowy form of the London Blitz. When she learns Jews are being exterminated by the thousands on the continent, Kája has no choice but to return to her mother city, risking her life to smuggle her family to freedom and peace.

Connecting across a century through one little girl, a Holocaust survivor with a foot in each world, these two women will discover a kinship that springs even in the darkest of times. In this tale of hope and survival, Sera and Kája must cling to the faith that sustains and fight to protect all they hold dear—even if it means placing their own futures on the line.

Why I Want It
I loved this author's debut novel and I can't wait to enjoy her talent again. Plus it's a WWII story, my favorite!

Dauntless by Dina L. Sleiman

This week, the
Christian Fiction Blog Alliance
is introducing
Dauntless
Bethany House Publishers (March 3, 2015)
by
Dina L. Sleiman

MY THOUGHTS:
It started with the cover, it was completely unique and snagged my attention immediately, then I read the synopsis and I knew I had to read this book. But even though this book sounded amazing, I tried to keep my expectations low. One never knows what to expect from a debut author and I didn't want to get my hopes too high only to have the book not be as good as I imagined. However all that worry was for naught since this book was simply amazing, far surpassing even my highest expectations and hopes! I loved every second and was completely swept away. From the very first sentence I was hooked and I devoured the book as quickly as my busy schedule allowed.
Everything about it was so unique and interesting! I loved how it was kind of a twist on Robin Hood yet so different that you didn't find yourself comparing it to the legend. I also loved the fact that the group was made entirely of children, life dealt them a hard hand but they didn't let that stop them. The tumbling aspect was so much fun and had me wishing I could do the tricks that they could.
Merry was brilliant! I was amazed by how talented she was for being so young and was very impressed by how she took charge and trained the group. I also liked how she never put on airs even though she'd once been a lady. Timothy was a great hero and even though he hadn't always made the best choices, he was there when it counted. I loved the verbal banter between Merry and Timothy and it was fun to watch them rekindle the feelings they'd had when they were younger.
As for the rest of the Ghosts of Farthingale, they were so fun and unique and I loved them all! I can't wait to read Allen's story in Chivalrous!

ABOUT THE AUTHOR:
A word from the author:
Since selling my first book, I have also become an acquisitions editor for the company. I am a member of the Inkwell Inspirations blog, HEWN Marketing, ACFW, and a contributor to Christian Review of Books. In addition, I have taught college and high school classes in writing and literature, as well as homeschool classes in the fine arts, and now enjoy teaching at writers conferences throughout the nation.

ABOUT THE BOOK
Where Legend and History Collide,
One Young Woman Will Fight for the Innocent

Born a baron's daughter, Lady Merry Ellison is now an enemy of the throne after her father's failed assassination attempt upon the king. Bold and uniquely skilled, she is willing to go to any lengths to protect the orphaned children of her former village--a group that becomes known as "The Ghosts of Farthingale Forest." Merry finds her charge more difficult as their growing notoriety brings increasing trouble their way.
Timothy Grey, ninth child of the Baron of Greyham, longs to perform some feat so legendary that he will rise from obscurity and earn a title of his own. When the Ghosts of Farthingale Forest are spotted in Wyndeshire, where he serves as assistant to the local earl, he might have found his chance. But when he comes face-to-face with the leader of the thieves, he's forced to reexamine everything he's known.

From the Start by Melissa Tagg

About the Book
Kate Walker used to believe in true love and happily ever after. While her own love life may have left her brokenhearted, it hasn't kept her from churning out made-for-TV romance movie screenplays...until a major career slump and a longing to do something meaningful send her running back to her hometown of Maple Valley.
Permanently sidelined by an injury, former NFL quarterback Colton Greene is temporarily hiding out in a friend's hometown to avoid the media and the reminders of all he's lost. Maple Valley seems like the perfect place to learn how to adjust to normal life. The only trouble is he's never really done normal before.
While Kate plays things safe and Colton is all about big risks and grand gestures, they both get what it's like to desperately need direction in life. An unexpected project gives them both a chance to jumpstart their new lives, but old wounds and new dreams are hard to ignore. Starting over wasn't part of the plan, but could it be the best thing that's ever happened to them?

My Thoughts
Oh were to begin?! As I fully expected, I adored every second of this book! I've been a huge Melissa Tagg fan ever since I started Made to Last and I swear she's only gotten better! After reading her novella Three Little Words which introduced us to the Walkers and Maple Valley, my anticipation for this book (which was already exceedingly high) went through the roof.
Maple Valley is such a quaint town and I wish it was real so I could move there. It was that perfect small town that made you feel at home the second you stepped into it.
As for Kate and Colton, they were amazing! I loved both of them so much. Their banter was such fun and watching them fall in love had me melting. The scene where they meet was one of the funniest I have ever read and had me laughing so hard! You could just tell from the get go that they were perfect for each other. I really could identify with a Kate a lot, especially the shying away from risks, and the disinterest in football, though I will admit Colton had even me rethinking my dislike of football! My heart wanted to break for the life Colton had experienced and I loved watching him find his place in Maple Valley and in the Walker family. He was exactly the kind of hero I love, a little bit broken, a reformed bad boy, funny, hardworking, and caring. I loved how he was willing to do whatever necessary to help those he cared about.
So yeah Kate and Colton were a spectacular heroine and hero, but we can't forget about everyone else! I love the entire Walker clan! Even if so far we've only got to talk to Beckett on the phone! From Case's amazing wisdom and fathering, to Logan's typical big brother routines and his care for his family, to Reagan and her adorable eccentrics and kind nature with everyone. I also loved Bear, Marcus and his family, Webster, and Megan, whose characters helped make this story the amazing thing of beauty it is!
I honestly loved every second and wanted to reread it the moment I finished. I also find myself feeling homesick for Maple Valley even though it's a fictional town! I honestly can not get my hands on book two fast enough!

Three Little Words by Melissa Tagg

About the Book
Ava Kingsley and Seth Walker might be the most unlikely friends ever. The only thing these two polar opposites have in common is a knack for wordsmithing. Back in college, they were known for their written sparring in the campus newspaper's popular "He Says/She Says" column.
At their ten-year college reunion, they pick up right where they left off. Except this time their squabbling leads to a surprising turn: friendship and a year-long exchange of emails. So when Ava approaches a crossroads in her athletics department career in Minnesota, Seth is quick to offer the open apartment above the restaurant he's been remodeling in Maple Valley, Iowa.
Ava doesn't know where her career will lead her next, but she's starting to suspect she might see Seth as more than a pen pal. Which would be exciting...except for the fact that he only sees her as a friend.
As Maple Valley grows on her, Ava wonders if there might be something here for her even though Seth is unavailable. And maybe, just maybe, after all the words the two of them have exchanged over the years, they'll finally be able to say the three that matter most.
Three Little Words is an e-only novella that gives an exciting introduction to Melissa Tagg's new series about the charismatic Walker family and the endearing town of Maple Valley!

My Thoughts
When I heard one of my absolute favorite authors was going to be releasing a novella I was so excited especially since it's connecting her Where Love Begins series to her new Walker family series. I downloaded it the second I was able to and had it finished as fast as I could. It was so stinkin' adorable and I had a huge dopey grin on my face the whole time I read it and for awhile after I finished!
I loved Seth and Ava's characters so much and their love story was just the sweetest thing ever! Their constant bantering was so much fun and had me laughing out loud at times. I really liked the fact that they knew each other in college and had had the year of emailing which made the shorter romance entirely believable and removed the rushed feeling that usually accompanies novellas.
I fell in love with the town of Maple Valley and especially loved Seth's restaurant! Melissa did an amazing job of creating a unique place and describing it so perfectly that you felt like you were there. I also fell in love with the people in the town like Uncle Case, Reagan, Bear, and so many others! I am definitely looking forward to reading more about them in this new series!
Everything about this story was amazing and the only thing I would have changed was making it longer because I didn't want it to end! I highly encourage you to download this gem for yourself, you won't be sorry!

Sabotaged by Dani Pettrey

About the Book
Finally Returned Home, Reef McKeena
Finds His Beloved Alaska Facing Its Greatest Threat
Growing up, goody-two-shoes Kirra Jacobs and troublemaker Reef McKenna were always at odds. Now, working together as search-and-rescue for Alaska's arduous Iditarod race, a growing attraction seems to be forcing aside old arguments. Then Reef catches Kirra sneaking from camp in the middle of the night.
Kirra's uncle, a musher in the race, has disappeared. Kirra and Reef quickly track the man, but what they discover is harrowing: Frank's daughter has been kidnapped. Kirra and Reef, along with the entire McKenna family, are thrown into a race to stop a shadowy villain who is not only threatening a girl's life--but appears willing to unleash one of the largest disasters Alaska has ever seen.

My Thoughts
Reading this book was bittersweet. On one hand I was ecstatic to read it since I've adored the other four books in this series and couldn't wait to read Reef's story. But on the other hand I was quite sad to have to say goodbye to the McKennas. But that all left my mind as soon as I read the first pages and got completely sucked in. The action was non-stop from page one, and I could not stop turning pages. Dani Pettrey definitely knows how to grab her reader's attention and not let it go till they are reading the last sentence.
I loved Reef and Kirra and it was so much fun to watch their love story unfold. It was so cute how they'd grown up not liking each other very much but then ended up falling in love. They were so opposite and that just made their romance all that more adorable.
I thought the setting of the Iditarod was genius and unique, though it did have me thinking of Snow Dogs quite a lot!
And lastly even though it was so hard to say goodbye to this amazing family, the ending scene was beyond perfect and left me with a huge dopey grin on my face.
In short this book, and this series, are just so stinkin' good and if you haven't read them yet you need to do so ASAP!
