The Magnolia Duchess by Beth White

About the Book
Fiona Lanier is the only woman in the tiny Gulf Coast settlement of Navy Cove. While her shipbuilding family races to fill the demand for American ships brought by the War of 1812, Fiona tries to rescue her brother who was forced into service by the British Navy.

Lieutenant Charlie Kincaid has been undercover for six months, obtaining information vital to the planned British invasion of New Orleans. When a summer storm south of Mobile Bay wrecks his ship and scatters the crew, Charlie suffers a head injury, ultimately collapsing in the arms of a beautiful mermaid who seems eerily familiar. As Charlie's memory returns in agonizing jags and crashes, he and Fiona discover that falling in love may be as inevitable as the tide. But when political loyalties begin to collide, they'll each have to decide where their true heart lies.

My Thoughts
I love how this author writes about the more unknown parts of well known historical events. The history nerd in me just soaks up all of the interesting tidbits that she builds her stories around.
That being said I had mixed feelings about this book. On one hand I absolutely loved it but at the same times there were many instances where I felt pulled out of the story for reasons that I really can't seem to put a finger on. At times it just seemed a little disjointed with lots of time jumps throughout. Thankfully the author always provided a date when she jumped so it kept you from getting to lost. Now please don't take all of that to mean I didn't enjoy this book, I really did! I enjoyed both Fiona and Charlie's characters and I sympathized with them as they were torn apart by circumstances they didn't have control over. Their relationship had it's ups and downs but I admired how they stuck by each other through it all.
The Lanier family can be a little hard to keep track of since the books take place over many many years but it's cool to see once you piece them together!
All in all this really was an enjoyable read!

It is a truth universally acknowledged that a zombie in possession of brains must be in want of more brains. Never was this truth more plain than during the recent attacks at Netherfield Park, in which a household of eighteen was slaughtered and consumed by a horde of the living dead.

My Thoughts
A twist on a classic. I'm not sure what to expect from this book but I'm giving it a shot because I've heard the movie is good and I want to see it and I'm the read-the-book-first type.

The Reluctant Duchess by Roseanna M. White

About the Book
A Riveting Edwardian Series Set among Britain's High Society
Lady Rowena Kinnaird may be the heiress to a Highland earldom, but she has never felt good enough--not for her father, not for the man she thought she'd marry, not for God. But after a shocking attack, she's willing to be forever an outcast if it means escaping Loch Morar.
Brice Myerston, the Duke of Nottingham, has found himself in possession of a rare treasure his enemies are prepared to kill for. While Brice has never been one to shy away from manor-born ladies, the last thing he needs is the distraction of Lady Rowena, who finds herself in a desperate situation. But when Rowena's father tries to trap Brice into marrying his daughter, Brice makes a surprising decision.
Rowena wanted to escape the Highlands, but she's reluctant to marry a notorious flirt. And when she learns that Brice is mixed up in questionable business with a stolen treasure, she fears she's about to end up directly in the path of everything she was trying to avoid.

My Thoughts
This book had so much going for it before I even started the first page! First of all I love this author's books in general and the first book in this series was absolutely amazing. Secondly I loved Brice's character in The Lost Heiress and couldn't wait to see his story play out. And the last reason was the fact that this is a marriage of convenience story, and anyone who knows anything about my reading habits knows that that is one of my absolute favorite story lines. So with all of those reasons getting me giddy excited I dove in, and lost myself in the amazingness that was The Reluctant Duchess. As I already mentioned I was already a huge fan of Brice's before I began this book and each page only served to make me like him more and more. I loved his selfless nature, his desire to do anything to protect and care for those close to him, his close relationship with God, and the way he was so clearly tuned into, and willing to follow, the Spirit's leading. Rowena was a wonderful heroine as well, and my heart broke for all the pain she'd endured. But I admired the way that she never let it fully break her. Life beat her down time and again but she found a way to keep living. I also loved the fact that she was so authentic and didn't hide who she was. She had such a caring and loving heart and it shone through her actions. Rowena and Brice really were a well matched couple and I loved seeing their relationship and watching their love for each other slowly grow. There were so many moments that completely made me melt, but I won't spoil them! It was also great fun to catch up with the characters from the previous book and see how their lives had played out since we last saw them.
The Fire Eyes were once again the center of the action and mystery and there was enough intrigue to keep me hooked throughout the book. There were even some twists that I didn't even see coming!
So basically this book was one hundred percent awesome and I highly recommend this series! Can't wait for Ella's story!

How many books do you normally read in a month?

My Answer:
It totally varies by month, sometimes I have a month that's so good I read 30 books, other times I have a month where I barely finish 5 books, but more often it's between 10-12.

Like Never Before by Melissa Tagg

About the Book
Maple Valley became Amelia Bentley's haven after her heart and her dreams of a family were shattered. But her new life as a newspaper editor is shaken when the small-town paper is in danger of closing. Her one hope: A lead on an intriguing story that just might impress the new publisher...if only she knew who he was.
After his biggest campaign success yet, widowed speechwriter Logan Walker now has the chance of a lifetime--a spot on a presidential campaign. But his plans are interrupted when he finds out he's inherited his hometown newspaper. He travels home intent on selling the paper and spending some much-needed time with his young daughter before making the leap into national politics.
But instead of a quick sale and peaceful break from his hectic career, Logan finds himself helping Amelia chase her story. She's scrappy, but wounded. He's dependable, but lost. They may butt heads more than expected, but a series of leads on Maple Valley's quirky unsolved mystery is just the start of the sparks that fly in the office and in their hearts.

My Thoughts
I am not even sure how to describe the awesomeness that is this book! I always anxiously await the release of each new Melissa Tagg book but my anticipation for this one was off the charts for many reasons. First of all I swear she gets better with each and every book though I don't know how it's possible considering each time I finish a book of hers I think it's the pinnacle of awesomeness. Secondly I love the town of Maple Valley, I seriously would move there in a heartbeat if only it was a real place. And the third (and final reason I'm going to mention though I could go on for awhile) was because Melissa has been incessantly (in a good way) gushing about Logan for months and months and I honestly couldn't wait to meet this guy and find out if he lived up to the hype. (And oh my goodness he did, a swoon-worthy hero if ever I saw one.) Melissa has an amazing ability to write characters who are genuine, flawed human beings but she writes them in such a beautiful way that they completely capture your heart and that was definitely the case with Logan and Amelia! Logan, as I already kinda mentioned, was amazing. He was always putting others above himself and was determined to be the best he could be in every area of his life. I absolutely adored the way he loved his adopted daughter and my heart broke for him in the moments when various people questioned his ability to love and care for her! Amelia was fantastic as well, I loved her quirkiness, the way she embraced Maple Valley, her determination to save the newspaper, and her love of history! They both had been married previously, marriages that had ended with an unexpected accident and an unwanted divorce, so there was a lot of pain that still hadn't healed and some understandable hesitancy about pursuing a relationship. But as they spent more time together God used them to help each other heal and it was adorably beautiful to watch their romance bud, blossom, and bloom! They really were a perfect match!
I once again fell in love with the whole town of Maple Valley and especially the Walker family! I love how close all the siblings are and how they're willing to drop everything to help each other out! I really can't wait to get the rest of their stories!
I also thoroughly enjoyed the whole Kendall Wilkins mystery and had fun learning little bits of history I'd never really heard about before!
And of course I can't forget to mention the hilariously entertaining humor that Melissa is famous for! I seriously cannot count the number of times she had me smiling, chuckling, or flat out laughing out loud throughout this book!
Well I guess I should stop gushing at some point so while this review in no way does this book justice I hope it at least piqued your interest and has convinced you to try this amazing author out for yourself-I promise you won't be sorry!

Meet the Author

The Beautiful Pretender by Melanie Dickerson
Thomas Nelson-May 17, 2016

About the Book
After inheriting his title from his brother, the margrave has two weeks to find a noble bride. What will happen when he learns he has fallen for a lovely servant girl in disguise?
The Margrave of Thornbeck has to find a bride, fast. He invites ten noble born ladies who meet the king’s approval to be his guests at Thornbeck Castle for two weeks, a time to test these ladies and reveal their true character.
Avelina has only two instructions: keep her true identity a secret and make sure the margrave doesn’t select her as his bride. Since the latter seems unlikely, she concentrates on not getting caught. No one must know she is merely a maidservant, sent by the Earl of Plimmwald to stand in for his daughter, Dorothea.
Despite Avelina’s best attempts at diverting attention from herself, the margrave has taken notice. And try as she might, she can’t deny her own growing feelings. But something else is afoot in the castle. Something sinister that could have far worse—far deadlier—consequences

Playing the Part by Jen Turano

About the Book
Lucetta Plum is an actress on the rise in New York City, but is forced to abandon her starring role when a fan's interest turns threatening. Lucetta's widowed friend, Abigail Hart, is delighted at the opportunity to meddle in Lucetta's life and promptly whisks her away to her grandson's estate to hide out.
Bram Haverstein may appear to simply be a somewhat eccentric gentleman of means, but a mysterious career and a secret fascination with a certain actress mean there's much more to him than society knows.

Lucetta, who has no interest in Abigail's matchmaking machinations, has the best intentions of remaining cordial but coolly distant to Bram. But when she can't ignore the strange and mysterious things going on in his house, it'll take more than good intentions to keep her from trying to discover who Bram is behind the part he plays.

My Thoughts
As is always the case with Jen Turano's novels, this was a thoroughly enjoyable read! From the first page I was drawn into the hysterical adventure that was this book. Lucetta was an entertaining character in the first two books of the Ladies of Distinction series and it was fun to get to delve into her story more. I loved Bram, he was the quintessential knight-in-shining-armor type who was always looking out for misfits and those in need. One needed to look no further than his unusual staff and assortment of animals to find evidence of that. At first glance Lucetta and Bram weren't the obvious match, an independent actress determined to take care of herself and a seemingly eccentric castle owner who made it his mission to help anyone and everyone, but as the book progressed it was obvious that they were meant to be. In true Turano style there were plenty of mishaps and misunderstandings all of which had me smiling or laughing out loud. It was great to catch up with the characters from the previous books and I loved all of the new characters we got to meet. In short this was another well done book from an fabulous author and I can't wait to see what she's going to do next!

Meet the Author
Jen Turano, author of the Ladies of Distinction series and the A Class of Their Own series, is a graduate of the University of Akron. She is a member of ACFW and lives in a suburb of Denver, Colorado. Visit her website at www.jenturano.com.

The Question:
Have you ever ventured out of your comfort zone in terms of reading a genre you have never read? If so, did you get hooked on that new genre?

My Answer:
On occasion I read outside my comfort zone and my experiences have varied. Sometimes I enjoy the book, sometimes I don't. But I don't remember one ever getting me really hooked on a genre.

Hosted by: Rose City Reader

"Please join me every Friday to share the first sentence (or so) of the book you are reading, along with your initial thoughts about the sentence, impressions of the book, or anything else the opener inspires. Please remember to include the title of the book and the author's name."

She could have been more than she was. Rowena dug her toes into the cold sand, wrapped her wool-clad arms around her tweed-clad knees, and stared out into the clear, fathomless waters of Loch Morar.
