Waiting on Wednesday #73: First Date

"Waiting On" Wednesday is a weekly event that spotlights upcoming releases that we're
eagerly anticipating.

This week's pre-publication "can't-wait-to-read" selection is:

First Date by Melody Carlson
Revell-October 15, 2013

About the Book
Five high school friends have one thing in common as they start their sophomore year: none of them have ever been on a "real" date. With homecoming looming, they make a pact and start a secret club they call the DG (Dating Game). They're sworn to secrecy--and to purity--but the club is their way to set each other up on their first dates so they can report back to the DG. Of course, they all make different choices about how to deal with their parents and how to act on their dates, and they discover that they all have totally different experiences. Still, the things they learn about boys and dating will stick with them throughout high school.

Why I Want It
I usually enjoy this author's stories since they are quick and fun reads and this one sounds like it'll be rather good!

Friday Memes 7/26

The Question:
How do you organize your books to be read?

My Answer:
I just put them with the rest of my books (in alphabetical order by author) and then I have a list on my dry erase board so I can keep track of them!

Hosted by: Rose City Reader

"Please join me every Friday to share the first sentence (or so) of the book you are reading, along with your initial thoughts about the sentence, impressions of the book, or anything else the opener inspires. Please remember to include the title of the book and the author's name."

Sweat, hot and salty, flowed into Errol's eyes in the sticky heat of the fall afternoon. He forced a quick blink to shed the distraction, not daring to risk the split second it would take to wipe his brow.
The Hero's Lot by Patrick W. Carr

My Thoughts
Great beginning! Makes you wonder what is so important that he can even risk a second of distraction!

Prairie Song by Mona Hodgson

About the Book
The first step in a challenging journey is often the one that means the most.
Though it means saying goodbye to the beloved friends and spiritual mentors of her St. Charles, Missouri quilting circle, Anna Goben is certain that she needs to enlist her family in the Boones Lick Company wagon train. The loss of her beloved brother in the Civil War has paralyzed her mother and grandfather in a malaise of grief and depression and Anna is convinced that only a fresh start in the Promised Land of California can bring her family back to her. Although the unknown perils of the trail west loom, Anna’s commitment to caring for her loved ones leaves no room for fear—or even loving someone new.
During the five-month journey, trail hand Caleb Reger plans to keep a low profile as he watches over the band of travelers. Guarding secrets about his past and avoiding God’s calling on his life, Caleb wants to steer as far from Anna as she does him, but she proves to be just as he assessed her from the beginning— independent, beautiful trouble.
Led by a pillar of hope, the group faces rough terrain that begins to take a toll on their spirits. Will the wilderness of suffering lead them astray, or will the gentle song of love that echoes across the prairie turn their hearts toward God’s grace and the promise of a new home?

My Thoughts
After the extremely unfinished feel of the third prequel novella, Ripples Along the Shore, I was quite anxious to get to this book and see how the stories would play out. Though I was kinda sad that Boney and Anna didn't end up together I had kinda figured it out already since Boney is also a character in Mona's previous series The Sinclair Sisters of Cripple Creek which is set many years down the road from this series. That being said I really enjoyed watching Caleb and Anna's relationship grow from mutual dislike based on misconceptions to a beautiful romance. I was also happy that we got to read the rest of Caroline and Garrett's story! The setting of a wagon train was really fun and it was well executed. It was especially entertaining for me because as a child all of my attempts at writing a story ended up being about people heading west. Overall I really enjoyed this story and it just might be my favorite of this author's! Looking forward to book two!

Waiting on Wednesday #72: Carolina Gold

"Waiting On" Wednesday is a weekly event that spotlights upcoming releases that we're
eagerly anticipating.

This week's pre-publication "can't-wait-to-read" selection is:

Carolina Gold by Dorothy Love
Thomas Nelson-December 10, 2013

About the Book
The war is over, but at Fairhaven Plantation, Charlotte's struggle has just begun.
Charlotte Fraser returns to her late father's once-flourishing rice plantation on the Waccamaw River, determined to continue his tradition of growing the special kind of rice known as Carolina Gold. But Fairhaven Plantation is in ruins, the bondsmen are free, and money is scarce.
To make ends meet, Charlotte reluctantly accepts a position as tutor to the young daughters of Nicholas Betancourt, heir to the neighboring Willowood Plantation. Then Nick's quest to prove his ownership of Fairhaven sends Charlotte on a dangerous journey that uncovers a family mystery . . . and threatens all that she holds dear.

Inspired by historical events, Carolina Gold weaves together mystery, romance, and rich historical detail, bringing to life the story of one young woman's struggle to restore her ruined world.

Why I Want It
I've enjoyed the two books I've read of this author's and this one sounds interesting!

Anomaly by Krista McGee

About the Book
Thalli has fifteen minutes and twenty-three seconds left to live. The toxic gas that will complete her annihilation is invading her bloodstream. But she is not afraid.
Decades before Thalli's birth, the world ended in a nuclear war. But life went on deep underground, thanks to a handful of scientists known as The Ten. Since then, they have genetically engineered humans to be free from emotions in the hopes that war won't threaten their lives again.
But Thalli was born with the ability to feel emotions and a sense of curiosity she can barely contain. She has survived so far thanks to her ability to hide those differences. But Thalli's secret is discovered when she is overwhelmed by the emotion in an ancient piece of music.
She is quickly scheduled for annihilation, but her childhood friend, Berk, convinces The Ten to postpone her death and study her instead. While in the scientists' Pod, Thalli and Berk form a dangerous alliance, one strictly forbidden by the constant surveillance in the pods.
As her life ticks away, she hears rumors of someone called the Designer---someone even more powerful than The Ten. What's more, the parts of her that have always been an anomaly could in fact be part of a much larger plan. And the parts of her that she has always guarded could be the answer she's been looking for all along.
Thalli must sort out what to believe and who she can trust, before her time runs out . . .

My Thoughts
Where to begin? This book was amazing! I have read Krista McGee's previous three novels and while I loved all of them this was by far the best. From the very first sentence I was hooked and couldn't stop reading. The whole idea of the story was so cool and the execution of it was astounding. I was constantly surprised and never could quite guess what was coming next there were even times where I didn't know what was real and not. The characters were just as intriguing as the plot and I loved Thalli and Berk, and also a secondary character named John. He was a really awesome person who it seemed like you couldn't help but like! In summary this was a thrilling and amazing ride that left me quite anxious for book two. This author has definitely found her niche in dystopian.

About the Author

A Bride For All Seasons by Margaret Brownley, Debra Clopton, Mary Connealy, & Robin Lee Hatcher

About the Book
It All Started with an Ad in a Mail Order Bride Catalogue . . .
Melvin Hitchcock of the Hitching Post Mail Order Bride Catalog isn't dishonest---not exactly. If he tweaks his clients' applications a bit, it's because he's looking out for their best interests.
This charming bouquet of novellas introduces four Hitching Post prospects in the year 1870, each one eager for second chances . . . and hungry for happiness. Year in, year out, they'll learn that love often comes in unexpected packages.
And Then Came Spring by Margaret Brownley
Mary-Jo has been unlucky all her life. But who would guess she'd travel halfway across the country to meet her match . . . only to find him dead!
An Ever-After Summer by Debra Clopton
Ellie had no idea she's not what Matthew ordered. And what's wrong with being a "Bible thumper" anyway? She's determined to show him she's tougher than she looks---and just the girl he needs.
Autumn's Angel by Robin Lee Hatcher
Luvena would be perfect for Clay if she didn't come with kids. But kids are a deal breaker, especially in a rough-and-trouble mining town. The trouble is, there's no money to send them back. . .
Winter Wedding Bells by Mary Connealy
David's convinced he's not long for the world. He needs someone to mother his boys when he's gone---nothing more. Can plucky Irish Megan convince him to work at living instead of dying?

Purchase a copy: http://ow.ly/mL2Ln

My Thoughts
This was such a fun novella collection! I loved the premise of the book and I really like the four authors so I was super excited for the chance to review it! I couldn't believe the things the man moderating the letters edited from each couple's letters but in the end it worked out and was actually kinda amusing!
And Then Came Spring
This novella was really cute, the characters were fun, and there were quite a few amusing scenes. I really liked how the whole story played out.
An Ever After SummerThough the romance was a bit rushed in this one I still enjoyed it a lot. Ellie was awesome and despite Matthew's protests was perfect for him and Sophie. Prudy the mule was also quite hysterical and a great addition to the story.
Autumn's Angel
This was my least favorite of the four novellas due to the fact that it was really rushed but I still liked it. I loved how even though Clay didn't want kids he was really great with Luvena's nephew and nieces.
Winter Wedding Bells
This was my absolute favorite! Which really was no surprise since I love Mary Connealy's books so much. Megan was so much fun! I loved how she refused to believe David was dying and forced him to try to get better! There were many other things I loved but I don't want to spoil them!

About the Authors

Friday Memes 7/19

The Question:
What is your favorite classic novel?

My Answer:
I haven't read an overabundance of classic novels but I'd say my favorites are probably The Hobbit, The Lord of the Rings Trilogy, and The Chronicles of Narnia.

Hosted by: Rose City Reader

"Please join me every Friday to share the first sentence (or so) of the book you are reading, along with your initial thoughts about the sentence, impressions of the book, or anything else the opener inspires. Please remember to include the title of the book and the author's name."

"Shhhh. Somebody's coming." Liberty Holloway cocked her head toward the window as the muffled rhythm of hoofbeats rose above the drumming rain. "Rebels?" The word sat, bitter, on her tongue as her fists sank deeper into the bread dough she'd been kneading. They'd taken enough from her already, long before a single Confederate soldier had set foot in the North. Were they now here to raid her property as well?

My Thoughts
Great beginning! Really draws you in immediately and leaves you with so many questions!

Waiting on Wednesday #71: Perfectly Matched

"Waiting On" Wednesday is a weekly event that spotlights upcoming releases that we're
eagerly anticipating.

This week's pre-publication "can't-wait-to-read" selection is:

Perfectly Matched by Maggie Brendan
Revell-October 1, 2013

About the Book
Anna Olsen knows it's time to leave her sister's increasingly crowded house and start a life of her own. Following her sisters' examples, she becomes a mail-order bride, and after a short correspondence with clock maker and jeweler Edward Parker, she moves to Denver to become his wife. Almost immediately it's painfully apparent that Anna and Edward are very different. Anna is a free spirit who would rather be painting and enjoying the company of friends than cleaning house. Edward is a consummate perfectionist who, on their wedding day, hands Anna a list of chores that need to be done around the house daily.
Can this mismatched couple see past their differences to a harmonious future? Or will their disparate passions create obstacles neither is willing to surmount?

Maggie Brendan closes her Blue Willow Brides series with a heartwarming tale of true love despite misunderstanding, showing readers that God's timing is always perfect.

Why I Want It
I really enjoyed the other books in this series so I'm looking forward to Anna's story!

Top Ten Authors Who Deserve More Recognition

Top Ten Tuesday is a meme hosted by The Broke and the Bookish

So it's really hard to do top ten of this because in truth almost all authors deserve more recognition especially in the Christian genre. That being said I will try to pick just ten and they will be ten that I love but don't really hear too many people talking about! Note: These are just in the order I thought of them not in order of favorites!

#1. Susan May Warren-I do feel like more recently she's gotten more recognition but there are still so many people who have no idea who I'm talking about when I say she's my favorite author.

#2. Jenny B. Jones-Her book are laugh out loud funny and so good! It baffles me why more people don't read her books!

#3. Sarah Sundin-This is a newer author discovery for me and I can not believe it took me this long to read her books. The three that I've read were amazing and I absolutely adored them!

#4. Jen Turano-A newer author who is amazing! I thoroughly loved both of her books and cannot wait for the third!

#5. Roseanna M. White-I've only read one book and a novella of hers so far but they are amazingly good ones that I highly recommend! Really surprised that it took me this long to really find her!

#6. Dani Pettrey-Another newer author who's books I love! Great romantic suspense!

#7. Ronie Kendig-Such brilliantly gripping romantic suspense! I get so excited when a new book comes out and devour them as soon as I get them. They are some of the few books that I've actually preordered!

#8. Jody Hedlund-This author writes so beautifully it's impossible to not love her books! I even loved the one that was a genre I don't like! That's the sign of a great author!

#9. Karen Witemeyer-Some of the best western books ever! I love all 5 of her books so much!

#10. Cathy Marie Hake-I'll be the first to admit that I don't love all of her books but I do love quite a few of them and they are some of my all-time favorite books!

Friday Memes 7/12

The Question:
How long have you been blogging?

My Answer:
I personally have been blogging for a little less than two years but my sister started this blog back in 2004 I think!

Hosted by: Rose City Reader

"Please join me every Friday to share the first sentence (or so) of the book you are reading, along with your initial thoughts about the sentence, impressions of the book, or anything else the opener inspires. Please remember to include the title of the book and the author's name."

It was only the wind. Charlotte Harding wrapped her arms around her waist, trying to convince herself that there was no reason to tremble like a cottonwood leaf in a storm.
Waiting for Spring by Amanda Cabot

My Thoughts
Great beginning! Definitely makes you wonder what she's scared of that she has to convince herself that the sounds she was hearing was just wind.

Yesterday's Tomorrow by Catherine West

About the Book
She's after the story that might get her the Pulitzer. He's determined to keep his secrets to himself.
Vietnam, 1967. Independent, career-driven journalist Kristin Taylor wants two things: to honor her father's memory by becoming an award-winning overseas correspondent and to keep tabs on her only brother, Teddy, who signed up for the war against their mother's wishes. Brilliant photographer Luke Maddox, silent and brooding, exudes mystery. Kristin is convinced he's hiding something. Willing to risk it all for what they believe in, Kristin and Luke engage in their own tumultuous battle until, in an unexpected twist, they're forced to work together.
Ambushed by love, they must decide whether or not to set aside their own private agendas for the hope of tomorrow that has captured their hearts.
Purchase a copy: http://ow.ly/mpTnp

My Thoughts
So I seriously considered just angrily hitting random keys until I had a paragraph and then ending with "and that's how I really feel!" But I decided to be a good person and actually try to voice my thoughts (and though my first sentence might have made you think I hate the book that is not the case at all!).
I wasn't quite sure what to expect from this book and I almost didn't request it. But I hadn't really read anything set during this time so I decided to give it a shot. At first I really wasn't getting into the book. It was one of those times where there was absolutely nothing necessarily wrong with the book it just wasn't fully snagging my attention. But then I got sucked in and finished the remainder of the book in one day. It is really hard to find words for this book and I literally went through the full spectrum of emotions while reading. I was smiling, laughing, sighing, groaning, crying, yelling in frustration and anger, and muttering under my breath. (If you don't believe me you can ask my sister who enjoyed laughing at me while I read!) The story was amazingly well written and the author did a great job of portraying the horrors of what was going on while not getting too graphic. The characters were great (even if they did drive me bonkers at times) and Jonno (Kristin and Luke's friend) was my absolute favorite! All in all this book was very good and I highly recommend it as long as you enjoy books that bring out all of your emotions!
*There are a couple instances of God's name being taken in vain as well as a couple uses of the bad word for donkey and the place of fire and brimstone. Also there's mention of a couple who are "together" before marriage but absolutely no detail is given.

About the Author

Waiting on Wednesday #70: Nightmare City

"Waiting On" Wednesday is a weekly event that spotlights upcoming releases that we're
eagerly anticipating.

This week's pre-publication "can't-wait-to-read" selection is:

Nightmare City by Andrew Klaven
Thomas Nelson-November 5, 2013

About the Book
Tom Harding only wants the truth. But the truth is becoming more dangerous with every passing minute.
As a reporter for his high school newspaper, Tom Harding was tracking the best story of his life—when, suddenly, his life turned very, very weird. He woke up one morning to find his house empty . . . his street empty . . . his whole town empty . . . empty except for an eerie, creeping fog—and whatever creatures were slowly moving toward him through the fog.
Now Tom’s once-ordinary world has become something out of a horror movie. How did it happen? Is it real? Is he dreaming? Has there been a zombie apocalypse? Has he died and gone to hell?
Tom is a good reporter—he knows how to look for answers—but no one has ever covered a story like this before. With the fog closing in and the hungry creatures of the fog surrounding him, he has only a few hours to find out how he lost the world he knew. In this bizarre universe nothing is what it seems and everything—including Tom’s life—hangs in the balance.

My Thoughts
I have loved all of Andrew Klaven's books that I've read before and this one sounds so intriguing!
