Searching for You by Jody Hedlund

About the Book
Despite years on the run, Sophie Neumann is determined to care for two young children. She won't abandon them the way she thinks her older sisters abandoned her. But times are growing desperate, and when she falls in with the wrong crowd and witnesses a crime, she realizes fleeing 1850s New York is her only option.
Disappearing with her two young charges into a group of orphans heading west by train, Sophie hopes to find safety and a happy life. When the train stops in Illinois for the first placement of orphans, Sophie faces the most difficult choice of her life.

Reinhold Weiss has finally purchased his own small farm. With mounting debts, a harvest to bring in, and past scars that haunt him, he's in no position to give his heart away . . . but can he say no when his long-lost friend shows up on a nearby train pleading for his help?

My Thoughts
Finally we get to discover what happened to Sophie after she disappeared! The girl we meet as the book begins is not the same one we last saw. Not only is she older but life has hardened her. Beneath it all though her kind heart still shines through, in the way she cares for Olivia and Nicholas and in other little ways. She had a lot of past hurt and loss to work through and I enjoyed seeing the way she matured as the book went on.
Reinhold has appeared frequently in the previous books of this series and I’ve always liked him. He works hard without complaint and strives to be a better man than his father. He had some personal demons to wrestle with but he had a good heart that just wanted the best for those he cared about.
I wasn’t sure about them as a couple due to his history with Sophie’s sisters but you could see how well matched they were as the story unfolded and in the end they were just what each other needed.
I really loved the Duff family with their big personalities and bigger hearts!

The end of this book made me quite happy and I loved seeing everything come together! A wonderful conclusion to another fantastic series from Jody Hedlund!

Meet the Author
Jody Hedlund is the author of over twenty historicals for both adults and teens and is the winner of numerous awards including the Christy, Carol, and Christian Book Award.
Jody lives in central Michigan with her husband, five busy children, and five spoiled cats. Although Jody prefers to experience daring and dangerous adventures through her characters rather than in real life, she’s learned that a calm existence is simply not meant to be (at least in this phase of her life!).

When she’s not penning another of her page-turning stories, she loves to spend her time reading, especially when it also involves consuming coffee and chocolate.

I received a complimentary copy of this book from the publisher. I was not required to write a positive review. All opinions expressed are my own.

My Thoughts on Day
Today was not as stellar as I hoped, which was surpising considering the children I nanny actually slept for a decent chunk of the day. But I think the book I DNF'd threw off my groove a bit and I had evening plans. Hoping to make tomorrow better!

A Bound Heart by Laura Frantz

About the Book
Though Magnus MacLeish and Lark MacDougall grew up on the same castle grounds, Magnus is now laird of the great house and the Isle of Kerrera. Lark is but the keeper of his bees and the woman he is hoping will provide a tincture that might help his ailing wife conceive and bear him an heir. But when his wife dies suddenly, Magnus and Lark find themselves caught up in a whirlwind of accusations, expelled from their beloved island, and sold as indentured servants across the Atlantic. Yet even when all hope seems dashed against the rocky coastline of the Virginia colony, it may be that in this New World the two of them could make a new beginning--together.
Laura Frantz's prose sparkles with authenticity and deep feeling as she digs into her own family history to share this breathless tale of love, exile, and courage in Colonial America.

My Thoughts
I've discovered that you can’t read a Laura Frantz book fast. Her writing is so beautiful and rich that it makes you slow down and savor each artistically crafted sentence.
This book, like the others before it, was amazing. The story takes place in multiple locations and the author brought each one to life in vivid detail, transporting you to another time.
I absolutely loved both Lark and Magnus. Neither of them had had an easy life, facing many losses, and being the victims of circumstances beyond their control, but their attitudes through it all were inspiring. They never let their circumstances dictate their attitudes, instead they trusted God and His plans for them, their faith never wavering.
The story took place over a long span of time but it never dragged, the pacing was expertly handled and I was swept along with the characters.
I loved how the romance was subtly woven in, starting as a childhood friendship that remained strong throughout the years. Even when Magnus married they remained friends, only after his wife died did their friendship blossom into something more.
I feel like this review in no ways does justice to the beauty of this novel and I highly recommend you read it!

Code of Valor by Lynette Eason

About the Book
What Detective Brady St. John really needs is a relaxing vacation. Unfortunately, just as the sun is setting on his second day at a friend's cabin on Lake Henley, he hears a scream and races to rescue a woman from her would-be killer. When the killer escapes only to return to finish the job, Brady vows to utilize all of his many resources to keep her safe--and catch those who would see her dead.
Financial crimes investigator Emily Chastain doesn't trust many people. And even though she let the detective who saved her life in on a few pertinent facts about why she was being attacked, there are some things you just don't share with a stranger. Little does she suspect that the secret she is keeping just might get them both killed.
Bestselling and award-winning author Lynette Eason sends readers on a race for the truth in this heart-stopping story of risk, regret, and redemption.

My Thoughts
I read this book in almost one sitting! I’ve loved Brady in the previous books so I was really excited for him to get his story! He’s a protector at heart and it showed in his care of Emily from the very start. And I loved the way he saw her beauty when she couldn’t see it for herself and consistently reminded her of it.
Emily hadn’t had an easy life but she pushed through her past to find joy. She still struggled with things, like her self-image, but she didn’t let her past control her life.
Brady and Emily were thrown together through unfortunate circumstances but I loved watching their relationship quietly unfold as they worked side by side to find answers.
The suspense/mystery angle had me quickly turning pages and kept throwing twists I didn’t see coming!
I once again loved seeing the St. John clan, their family dynamic is quite entertaining and I can’t wait to read more of them! I also loved the appearance of characters from Lynn H. Blackburn’s Dive Team Investigations series!
All in all a wonderful addition to Eason’s brilliant romantic suspense line-up!
