CSFF: Broken Angel by Sigmund Brouwer

The CSFF party for Broken Angel by Sigmund Brouwer is in full swing, and I feel like I'm missing out! I'm only halfway through the book, and allergy season has kicked in, making my life miserable. I'll put up more comments later, and in the meantime skim through blogs dodging spoilers like potholes.

One of the most interesting aspects of the book so far is the theocracy (complete with 25-foot electric fences) the main character is trying to escape. Having legalists in power has been done before, though it's not often an entire country. Making it illegal to read and own books, even a Bible, brought a fresh twist.

To keep tabs on everyone and fill the gap left by the absence of reading and writing, the government has issued high-tech vidpods - imagine an iPhone with extra capabilities, mandatory video podcasts of teaching and official messages, and a nasty dose of privacy invasion. Not too hard to imagine, eh?

Legalistic "Christians" forming their own country is a bit more far-fetched, but also more eerie. But get a few power-hungry nutjobs with a huge tract of land and anything can happen (FLDS compound is a case in point).

Katie, so sorry you're having to deal with allergies. I know how miserable that is. Hope you enjoy the rest of the book.
