Friday Memes 11/8

Book Blogger Hop

The Question:
Do you post your book reviews as soon as you have completed the book or do you wait a few days?

My Answer:
It varies. Sometimes I write them as soon as I finish the book, sometimes it's later that day, week, month, or year! Depends on my  mood, my feelings about the book, or when the review is due!

Hosted by: Rose City Reader

"Please join me every Friday to share the first sentence (or so) of the book you are reading, along with your initial thoughts about the sentence, impressions of the book, or anything else the opener inspires. Please remember to include the title of the book and the author's name."

Prologue
April 9, 2003 Baghdad, Iraq
The ground rattled. Dust plumed and pushed aside the curtain, unveiling the specter of war that raged  beyond. The bridge...The American Marines had already taken the bridge. The airport.
Beowulf by Ronie Kendig

My Thoughts
Great beginning! I really want to keep reading!

Paige Rewritten by Erynn Mangum

This week, the
Christian Fiction Blog Alliance
is introducing
Paige Rewritten
NavPress (October 8, 2013)
by
Erynn Mangum

MY THOUGHTS:
This was a great sequel to Paige Torn! I loved reading more about all the characters from the first book and watching how their lives were playing out. There were lots of new twists in Paige's life and I did not envy her in the least. This author once again did an amazing job of writing a book that drew me in, had me constantly reading more to find out what happened, and made me laugh a lot! After the way this book ended though I want to read Paige Turned right now!!
(Sorry for the short review it's just so hard to write reviews for series that are so connected they could easily be read as one book without giving stuff away!)

ABOUT THE AUTHOR:

A few things about her:

So, if we were having this conversation in person, we would probably be hanging out at Starbucks or one of the cute coffeehouses in town. I’m nuts about all things coffee, I’m crazy about all things pink and girly, and I love, love, love the Food Network! I’m married to my best friend and the most amazing guy ever, Jon. He is amiable toward coffee, does not like anything pink or girly and tolerates the Food Network. So, we make a good match! In July 2010, we became parents to one of the funniest, cutest, sweetest little guys in the whole world (and nope, we aren’t biased at all!), our Nater-Tot, who is legally known as Nathan. Most days, I’m cleaning up messes, making goofy faces, trying to fit some writing in, and just LOVING the life that God has given me!

ABOUT THE BOOK

Paige Alder is in a really good place. She’s dating nice guy Tyler. Her boss has offered her a raise. Her walk with God is strong. Life is great—and that’s when things start to change.

First, the youth pastor at church keeps asking Paige to work with him full-time. Then her sister shows up newly engaged and wanting to reconnect, even though they haven’t spoken in years. And now former boyfriend Luke has come back into her life. How is Paige supposed to know what the right decisions are?

This warm and humorous second book in the Paige Alder series will help young girls work through important issues, such as forgiving others and obeying God.

Snow on the Tulips by Liz Tolsma

About the Book
A stranger's life hangs in the balance. But to save him is to risk everything.
The war is drawing to a close, but the Nazis still occupy part of the Netherlands. After the losses she's endured, war widow Cornelia is only a shadow of the woman she once was. She fights now to protect her younger brother, Johan, who lives in hiding.
When Johan brings Gerrit Laninga, a wounded Dutch Resistance member, to Cornelia's doorstep, their lives are forever altered. Although scared of the consequences of harboring a wanted man, Cornelia's faith won't let her turn him out.
As she nurses Gerrit back to health, she is drawn to his fierce passion and ideals, and notices a shift within herself. Gerrit's intensity challenges her, making her want to live fully, despite the fear that constrains her. When the opportunity to join him in the Resistance presents itself, Cornelia must summon every ounce of courage imaginable.
She is as terrified of loving Gerrit as she is of losing him. But as the winter landscape thaws, so too does her heart. Will she get a second chance at true love? She fears their story will end before it even begins.

My Thoughts
I had really mixed feelings about this book. On one hand I loved it; The plot was great, the setting was perfect, and it is my absolute favorite time period to read about. I also thought it was so cool how the story was based on things that actually happened! I really liked the heroine, Cornelia, and I admired how she stayed strong through all the losses she endured and her protectiveness of her brother. It took me a little while to warm up to the hero, Gerrit, but I did end up liking him.  As for what I didn't like so much, things occasionally just seemed a little corny and there were a few parts that needed some work. That being said the good definitely outweighed the bad and I did really enjoy this book. I look forward to seeing what else this author has for us!

The Wall Around Your Heart by Mary DeMuth

About the Book
Family members hurt us. Friends betray us. Fellow Christians deceive us. But Jesus provides a path through the pain—the Lord’s Prayer.
In The Wall Around Your Heart, Mary DeMuth shows you that you can reach wholeness and healing in the aftermath of painful relationships by following the road map of the Lord’s Prayer. You’ll walk through story after story of hurt people who are led through biblical truth into amazing, life-sustaining, joyful growth.
Life is hard. People can be mean and petty and awful. But they can also be amazing and beautiful and sacrificial. God is good. He is faithful. You can trust him with your relationships. “He’ll send people to call out what is hard in your heart,” Mary shares. “And that’s a gift to you.”
Allow God to access the wall around your heart. Dare to say, “Tear down the bricks, Lord, whatever it takes.” Pray first. Ask for bravery—for yourself and for others. Risk engaging despite your hurt. Seek the shelter of Jesus.

You don’t have to resign yourself to your wounds! You can rise above the pain. You’ll usher in a new life—an openhearted way of relating to others that expands the kingdom of God. In the process, you’ll draw closer to Jesus, be healed, and become an agent of healing to others.

My Thoughts
Let me start out by saying that the main reason I didn't enjoy this book was because it wasn't really applicable for my life. The main focus of the book was recovering from damaged relationships and I honestly haven't really experienced any. I have had two close friends in my nineteen years, the first I've had since birth (our mom's became friends while pregnant with us so we were destined to be friends) and the second I've had since I was 10. I am still friends with both of them now. And I was blessed to be raised in a loving and Christian family so I honestly have not really experienced much if any in regards to relational pain. That all being said I can see how this book could be helpful to those who have gone through tough relationships. Other than wishing that there were a little less of the author's personal stories I really didn't find anything wrong with the book it just wasn't for me!

About the Author
Mary DeMuth is an author and speaker who loves to help people live uncaged, freedom-infused lives. She’s the author of fourteen books, including six novels and her critically acclaimed memoir, Thin Places. After church planting in Southern France, Mary, her husband, and their three teenagers now live in a suburb of Dallas. Find out more at marydemuth.com

Waiting on Wednesday #87: It Had to Be You

"Waiting On" Wednesday is a weekly event that spotlights upcoming releases that we're
eagerly anticipating.

This week's pre-publication "can't-wait-to-read" selection is:

It Had to Be You by Susan May Warren
Tyndale-February 1, 2014

About the Book
Eden Christiansen never imagined her role as her younger brother Owen’s cheerleader would keep her on the sidelines of her own life. Sure, it feels good to be needed, but looking after the reckless NHL rookie leaves little time for Eden to focus on her own career. She dreamed of making a name for herself as a reporter, but is stuck writing obits—and starting to fear she doesn’t have the chops to land a major story. If only someone would step up to mentor Owen . . . but she knows better than to expect help from team veteran and bad-boy enforcer Jace Jacobsen.

Jace has built his career on the infamous reputation of his aggressive behavior—on and off the ice. Now at a crossroads about his future in hockey, that reputation has him trapped. And the guilt-trip he’s getting from Eden Christiansen isn’t making things any easier. But when Owen’s carelessness leads to a career-threatening injury and Eden stumbles upon a story that could be her big break, she and Jace are thrown together . . . and begin to wonder if they belong on the same team after all.

Why I Want It
Well first off, it's a Susan May Warren book which means I want to own it. Secondly I loved the first book of this series and I'm excited to read Eden's story. And lastly it just plain sounds good!

 Hosted By: Book Journey

Here is what I finished last week:
These two were both pretty good.

What I am currently reading:
I'm 1/4 of the way through Dear Mr. Knightly and it is very unique but good! I've only read the prologue of Beowulf but I'm already loving it! And I'm not enjoying this non-fiction book as much but....

What I hope to read this week:
I need to read Paige Rewritten by Wednesday and even though I've been in a slight reading slump and have tons of crafting to due I'm hoping that I can at least start The Governess of Highland Hall this week!

Monthly Reflections #22: October 2013

Photobucket

Well October just flew by! I was able to surpass my goals to read 12 books and write 10 reviews and I ended up with 13 books and 16 reviews! I also completed another goal and for a couple days my TBR pile was officially empty! I have been trying to reach that goal for a couple years now and it felt really good!

Books I Read
I enjoyed all of these books but my favs are definitely I Really Do Miss Your Smile, Take a Chance on Me, and A Love Surrendered!! LOVED those three!

Reviews I Wrote:

In November I Hope To:
Read 8 books
Write 6 reviews
We are having are annual bazaar this month which means I need to get cracking on crochet projects and then there's an entire week where we do nothing by eat, sleep, and bake so I will have very little reading time!

Friday Memes 11/1

Book Blogger Hop

The Question:
When you are out of town, do you still participate in weekly memes or do you have your post scheduled to appear on your blog and perhaps check back? Or do you not participate at all?

My Answer:
I honestly have only been out of town once since I took over this blog and that was for about a week to visit my sister who was in a year long GFA School of Discipleship program. We spent every day at the GFA offices volunteering and they had wifi so I was able to still get my posts up and check back occasionally.

Dear Sir,                                                                                                                                 ~ April 2

It has been a year since I turned down your generous offer. Father John warned me at the time that I was making a terrible mistake, but I wouldn't listen. He felt that by dismissing the opportunity I was injuring not only myself, but all the foster children helped by your foundation.
Dear Mr. Knightly by Katherine Reay

My Thoughts
This beginning definitely raises questions! Of course having read the synopsis I had most of the answers but still! This was a good beginning to what is shaping up to be a very unique book!
